Periodontal
Evaluation
Early
detection as with other diseases is the key to successful
treatment. Your dental professional will routinely perform
a gum disease screening exam. This is recommended at
least once a year by the American Dental Association.
Periodontal
Disease Second ONLY to the Common Cold!
Dental
diseases (cavities and gum disease) are the most common
diseases affecting people besides the common cold !
With the addition of fluoride to our water and toothpaste,
dental decay has almost become a problem in the past.
But, it took the addition of fluoride to win that battle.
Brushing and flossing alone did not work. The same is
try with periodontal disease. Brushing and flossing
may not be enough.
Gingivitis
is a bacterial infection of the gums that is reversible.
However periodontal disease is a gum and bone disease.
The infection has spread from the gum into the bone
and permanent damage has occurred. There are several
stages of this disease. If detected early it can be
controlled.
Periodontal
Disease is a serious infection. I has been linked to
a variety of health concerns including heart disease,
stroke, diabetes and other degenerative diseases that
are life threatening. It’s not just about your
teeth anymore.
Periodontal
Disease can be a disfiguring disease. Your gums swell
in size and become very red and angry looking. They
may bleed very readily. Your teeth can shift and dark
spaces between your teeth may start showing. Teeth then
become loose and need to be removed.
Early
detection as with other diseases is the key to successful
treatment. Your dental professional will routinely perform
a gum disease screening exam. This is recommended at
least a year by the American Dental Association.
The
results of this exam will determine your periodontal
status. If you have periodontal disease, your treatment
will be personalized for you and your level of infection.
A routine cleaning is not enough by itself to treat
periodontal disease.
The
treatment (root planing and scaling) consists of professional
in-office care that detoxifies the tooth surfaces below
the gum line and in between the teeth. Then a medicine
will be used to flush out the bacteria that caused the
infection.
Without
careful on-going monitoring and treatment from your
dental professional, periodontal disease can recur.
Your daily care and professional maintenance visits
are a commitment to better health.
Gum
Disease is due to a bacterial infection and your body’s
response to that infection. Other factors that may put
you at increased risk are:
- Family
History
- Medications
- Age
- Gender
- Family
Transmission
- Smoking
- Prior
Gum Disease
- Clenching/
Grinding
- Stress
- Osteoporosis
- Diabetes
- Hormones
Because
of the damage created by the periodontal infection you
have special needs in daily care. Although floss is
an excellent preventive aid it does not reach those
areas under the gum line. The Rota-Dent is the only
instrument that by itself has been proven to remove
the bacterial from all the surfaces of the teeth including
in between the teeth.
